"It is with great sadness that we record the passing  of our friend and colleague Frank Bechhofer.

As well as his long-term contribution to sociology Frank played a key role in the development of Science, Technology and Innovation Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

He established the Research Centre for Social Sciences in 1984 with a mission to support high quality interdisciplinary social science focusing on two substantive areas: economic and social life in Scotland and socio-economic research on technology.

Seedcorn funds he secured supported my move to Edinburgh to coordinate our successful bid under the ESRC Programme on Information and Communication Technologies working with Donald MacKenzie, David Edge, Martin Fransman  and Jamie Fleck. The success of this programme of externally funded and postgraduate research into technology and innovation, alongside the Science Studies Unit’s work on the history and sociology of science, culminated first in the establishment of the Institute for the Study of Science, Technology and Innovation in 2000 and in 2008 the merger of RCSS and SSU to form the Science, Technology and Innovation Studies Subject Group.

Frank’s foresight and wisdom created the foundations for the growth and dynamism of the growth and dynamism of the Science, Technology and Innovation Studies at the University of Edinburgh today."
