PhD Overview
Large-scale information infrastructures have the capacity to connect multiple and very different worlds, contexts, and systems; support multiple users and serve multiple purposes. New artifacts and new kinds of information exchange between primary and secondary care and related social services, made possible by advances in Information and Communication Technologies, are expected to deliver improvements in the quality, timeliness and efficiency of health services. These possibilities have therefore produced high expectations and big promises. There is however little current understanding of how effective exchange can be achieved and what the consequences will be; there is also little understanding about the cross-organisational process of construction and negotiation of such interoperability; and the new uses and practices that users develop when such information infrastructures are already in use in different contexts. This research is conducted on a real-life NHS regional laboratory in England, where which a new generation of cross boundaries digital platforms are being developed. This research will identify emergent patterns of uses, practices and early outcomes in collaboration and interaction between actors, resulting from the ability to share clinical data.
