Section: Research Groups

Innogen

Many of the scholars in the subject group are working on the theme of innovation studies.  Currently, most of this work is done through our direct links to Innogen, the ESRC Centre for Social and Economic Research on Innovation in Genomics.

Innogen was established in October 2002 and spans both the University of Edinburgh and The Open University. It is part of the ESRC Genomics Network, one of the largest social science investments in the ESRC's current portfolio. The other groups in this network are Egenis, Cesagen, and the Genomics Policy and Research Forum.

At Innogen we aim to:

  • build an innovative programme of fundamental and applied research on two primary themes: 'Evolution of the new life science economy' and 'Governance of innovation in the life sciences'
  • strengthen our acknowledged contributions to interdisciplinary collaborative research methodology and disseminate findings to academic and stakeholder communities
  • conduct a a strong and innovative programme of high quality disciplinary research, particularly in science and technology studies, sociology, economics and business studies, law, development studies, risk analysis, policy and regulation
  • continue to  develop our distinctive focus on globalisation and its particular expertise in empirical research on life-science-based innovation in Africa, India and China
  • engage pro-actively, and in collaboration with the ESRC Genomics Network, with stakeholder communities in the UK, Europe, and internationally, including:
    • innovation communities
    • policy makers and government
    • public and stakeholder groups
